By 2015 the mobile workforce across the planet should rise to around one 1.3 billion. This is an astronomical figure, and only confirms that companies around the world are switching on to the idea of having employees roaming while working at the same time. However, this means that there are some precautions companies need to take to make sure these employees work well. These precautions will ensure that the employees are switched on properly, smartly, and able to not only complete their tasks but also to do them more efficiently. There are some important lessons to be learned by companies and this article will go through a few of those.

As a business your main concern should be security. Things are not the same, and today's mobile worker will have access to data literally across the globe. This means that your own data protection within your organisation has to be managed. They call it a 'layered approach', and a layered approach needs to be followed closely to ensure for security. This approach starts with solid encryption, to ensure that all data is secure at the very source. You then need to make sure that authentication is handled carefully with all precautions taken. Network access control is something that a company needs to take very, very seriously. If access is in any way compromised, and this means in even the slightest way, then the data that the company has and needs to protect will be under threat. The solution is simple. Ensure your network access infrastructure is carefully checked and made a literal stronghold for data. Once your access is clearly safe and protected there is little that people can do to infiltrate.

Educate your staff

Companies and organisations also need to take on the issue of educating their staff. Staff may happily bring their own devices into work and then take them out into the field but this does not mean that they will make all the right decisions. There has to be a clear company policy set out at the early stages that lets staff know what to download and when. If this is not done then you will have something called a data bottleneck, where everyone is trying to download data and information at the wrong times of day, or you may even have a situation where downloads that compromise security of the network become a real threat.

These pointers should give your organisation a clearer idea of how to manage mobile working. It is a fantastic concept, and it is quite right that workers are now using their own devices. It is nothing less than the future of working. However, businesses and organisations have a clear responsibility to employees to ensure that the work is done safely and securely. Make sure your policy is clear and ensure that all employees are aware of it and things should not go wrong. Also, have a clear conversation, a two-way conversation, between yourself and your employees and any problems or issues should come to light well in advance of them becoming a crisis.
